Devices are the part of an electrical system occupants actually touch, and they are where poor workmanship shows up first. On tenant fit-outs and occupied-building work, backstabbed receptacles, overfilled boxes and missing GFCI protection are the three defects we correct most often — usually in space that was built out on a compressed schedule.

Safety corrections we find constantly in commercial space
Two patterns account for most of the device-level problems we correct. The first is backstabbed connections — pushing a conductor into the hole on the back of a receptacle instead of landing it under the screw terminal. It is faster to install and it loosens over time, producing heat at the connection.
The second is missing GFCI protection where code has required it for decades. Break rooms, restrooms, janitor closets, mechanical spaces, loading docks, exterior and rooftop receptacles all require it, and older commercial buildings frequently do not have it.
Common questions
Can you add outlets without opening up the walls?
Usually, yes. Experienced electricians can fish new circuits through finished walls and ceilings in most construction with minimal cutting. Some framing conditions and fire-rated assemblies require access points, and we will tell you before we start if that is the case.
What is the difference between GFCI and AFCI?
A GFCI protects people. It detects current leaking to ground — through a person, for example — and cuts power in milliseconds. An AFCI protects the building. It detects the electrical signature of arcing, a leading cause of electrical fires. Current code requires both, in different locations.
