Sports lighting is judged by people standing under it, which makes it unusually unforgiving. Players need to track a ball against the sky. Spectators need to see the far side of the field. Neighbours need not to see any of it through their bedroom window. Those three requirements pull against each other, and resolving them is a photometric design problem before it is an electrical one.

Uniformity, not brightness

A field lit to a high average with poor uniformity plays worse than a lower average lit evenly. Players lose the ball in the transitions between bright and dim.

Spill light generates complaints

Residential neighbours are the most common source of objection to a lighting project. Controlled optics and correct aiming are what keep a facility usable at night.

Aiming is specialist work

High-mast poles aimed to a photometric plan. Reusing old aiming angles on an LED conversion reliably makes the lighting worse.

Light level follows the level of play

Recommended illuminance is set by class of play rather than by sport alone, and the range between them is wide. Recreational and community play needs far less than competitive or televised events, and specifying for the highest tier when a facility will never host it is a straightforward waste of capital and operating cost.

Broadcast changes everything. Television requires higher levels, tighter uniformity and — critically — flicker-free output at high frame rates for slow-motion capture. A driver adequate for community play can produce visible strobing on a broadcast replay.

Musco systems

Musco Lighting contracted EVO directly to install their high-mast systems on aviation apron work. The same discipline applies on sports installations: their product carries their name once it is in the ground, and a badly aimed installation reflects on them.

We install and service Musco systems, including their factory-aimed and pre-wired assemblies, and verify aiming in the field against the supplied photometric plan rather than assuming the factory settings survived transport and erection.

Why LED changed the economics

Metal halide sports lighting carried two costs that never appeared in the energy line: relamping at height with a lift, and the fifteen-minute restrike delay that meant lights ran through breaks and warm-ups because nobody dared switch them off.

LED removes both. Instant restrike means a field can be switched genuinely off between uses, and controls let a facility be scheduled, zoned and dimmed — a practice field at 50% rather than a full stadium at 100%. On heavily used municipal and school facilities that operational saving frequently exceeds the fixture efficiency saving.

Spill light and the neighbours

Complaints from adjacent residential property are the most common way a sports lighting project becomes a political problem, and they are almost entirely preventable. Full-cutoff optics, correct aiming, and visors where geometry demands them keep light on the field.

Where a facility sits close to housing we model spill at the property line during design and can provide the documentation a planning authority will ask for. It is far cheaper than re-aiming a completed installation under public pressure.

Common questions

Do you install Musco systems?

Yes. Musco Lighting has contracted EVO directly to install their high-mast systems, and we install and service their sports lighting products including verifying field aiming against the supplied photometric plan.

Will new field lighting bother the neighbours?

It should not, if it is designed properly. Full-cutoff optics and correct aiming keep light on the playing surface. Where a facility is close to housing we model spill at the property line during design and provide documentation for the planning authority.

Can we dim a field for practice?

Yes, and it is one of the strongest arguments for LED. Controls allow zoned and dimmed operation — a practice session at partial output on half the field rather than the full array at full power. On heavily used facilities this saves more than the fixture efficiency does.
